Women in Agriculture

Women play a significant role in the agriculture sector at Patebana community. In upland farming, they are involved in all activities beginning from clearing the land to harvesting and marketing food crops. They represent 70 percent of the agricultural labor force and do all the cooking for workers in the farm. Their role does not only stop by working in the field but also play a significant role in natural resource management.

Women's Group

Masimbo women farmers are disadvantaged in many ways that limits their farming potential and increase the level of poverty in the community. They have limited rights to land except in isolated cases. This is because the land tenure system in the Temne (tribe) societies grants the right to own and dispose of the land to adult men. In facts, women rights to own farming lands are often ties through to their husbands and these rights may cease to exist upon divorce, widowhood, or failure to have a son.

Masimbo Swamp rice farming

Samp rice farming is the main source of Rice production in the area. The upland farming has been limited becuase, the Makeni City is extending to the surbuban villages. It is extremely difficult to construct houses to the swamps lands. Therefore, the land owners reserve the swmp lands for rice production in the rainy season and use those swamps for the production of vegetabes, potatoes and cassava in the dry season.
